An adventure game with elements of survival horror, in which we play Hans - a young man wandering through a gloomy castle. Apart from exploring gloomy chambers and solving puzzles, during the game we talk to the characters we meet and hide from our opponents who make us shivers. Decision making also plays an important role, because it depends on them which of the five ways our adventure will end.

The Count Lucanor is an adventure game with clearly outlined elements of survival horror. The independent Spanish studio Baroque Decay was responsible for its development.

Story

The Count Lucanor takes us on a journey into a fairy-tale world. During the game we play Hans - a poor boy who did not receive any gifts on his birthday. For this reason, the young man decided to leave his family home and go to the forest in search of adventures; after dark, the frightened protagonist encountered a cobold, which he follows to the mysterious castle. On the spot, kobold had a vision of the boy becoming the new count - a condition that he had to fulfil in order to receive countless riches was to guess the cobold's name.

This is how Hans's adventure begins, leading to one of the fife available endings; which of them we will see is determined by the choices we make in the course of the game.

Mechanics

The action in The Count Lucanor is shown in isometric view. The main element of the game is the exploration of the gloomy manor - bathed in the darkness we lighten up chambers with a candle; an important role is also played by solving puzzles based primarily on manipulation of objects, some of which can be solved in several ways.

Hans encounters various characters and beings on his way, who can be friendly or hostile towards him. In the case of the former, our protege can count on, for example, a conversation (and often also tips on puzzles), while from the latter he must hide under the tables or behind the curtains (after all, we are talking about beasts taken out of a child's nightmare). On top of that, the castle is riddled with traps, which also pose a danger to the young man.

Technical aspects

The Count Lucanor adopts a retro style, which can be seen both in two-dimensional pixel art visuals and in a chiptune soundtrack based on Johann Sebastian Bach's work. Due to the fact that the plot has a non-linear character, the described title is characterized by high replayability.
