The fourth major installment in one of the most popular RPG series, developed by Bethesda Softworks. The game's story takes place in Cyrodiil, the Imperial Province in the continent of Tamriel. After the assassination of the realm's ruler, Emperor Uriel Septim VII, the main character has to find the rightful heir to the throne and have him crowned as the next emperor of Tamriel.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the fourth main installment of the popular RPG series set in a fantasy world. It was created by Bethesda Softworks and is considered by many players to be a masterpiece in its genre.
Plot: Abyss in Cyrodiil
The action of TES IV: Oblivion is set in the capital province of Cyrodiil of the Tamriel Empire. The last ruler of the state, with the help of an anonymous assassin, prematurely left this world. The throne of Tamriel remained empty. Such a situation favors the spread of anarchy, and in this case, it is associated with even worse implications.
When Tamriel has no ruler, the gates to the titular Abyss (equivalent to the hell we know) stand wide open, allowing various vile beasts to escape to freedom. The world is threatened by a great cataclysm and it is none other than the player who must prevent it. Our task is to find the rightful heir to the throne and ensure that he takes control over Tamriel.
Open world gameplay
Similar to the previous parts, Oblivion is characterized by a great deal of freedom in making decisions. This includes things like creating our own character, exploring the world, performing hundreds of side quests or completing the main mission. We can become a powerful warrior, mage, warlock, healer, or thief. There is also nothing to prevent us from ing different guilds or other factions at the same time and advancing in their ranks.
Our decisions and actions affect both the character we lead and the environment. The game world is inhabited by nearly 1000 NPCs, who make independent choices based on their personality, statistics, or individual daily plan. This is made possible by a special artificial intelligence system called Radiant AI.
The game world is huge and consists of numerous locations, inhabited by a community with its own history, culture, and politics. The places we visit change over time, and they are inhabited by over forty types of enemies with whom we engage in combat. Our character can travel on foot and on horseback. TES IV: Oblivion also offers a map with markers and a dynamic com, significantly facilitating exploration compared to the previous installments.
Engine, physics, mods
The game runs on Creation Engine and utilizes the capabilities of DirectX 9.0. This allows for things like smooth character animations, including their facial expressions or gestures performed by them. The physics of the game world are based on the Havok technology. The game also includes The Elder Scrolls Construction Set - this is a toolkit that allows for editing various elements of the game world, adding new locations, characters, monsters or items, and even creating separate realities.
Remaster of TES IV: Oblivion
In 2025, a thoroughly refreshed version of the game was announced, titled The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
