The Messenger is a debut game of the independent Canadian studio Sabotage. The game is a hybrid of a classic platform game inspired by 8-bit hits, and of metroidvania games from the 16-bit consoles. The title was released, among other platforms, on PC and Switch.
In The Messenger, the players assume the role of the titular messenger – a ninja warrior who must deliver a mysterious message. The fate of his clan depends on his mission because his village had fallen victim to the army of demons. The hero begins a dangerous mission through the dark world.
In The Messenger, the action is presented from a side perspective. In the early phase of the game, like in 8-bit platform games, the players are mostly traveling through locations, avoiding traps, jumping between platforms, and fighting encountered enemies.
Later, the game reveals its true colors – the locations are starting to be similar to labyrinths, protagonist’s skills can be upgraded, and in order to gain access to blocked placed and secret rooms, the players must first obtain specific equipment. As the players progress through the game, the protagonist gains new weapons (like katana and shurikens), a grappling hook, and a suit that enables him to slide in the air.
The graphics and sounds of The Messenger use a retro style. The pixel art graphics are accompanied by a dynamic, chiptune soundtrack composed by a musician known as Rainbowdragoneyes.
