The Trouble With Robots is the debut production of the independent Digital Chestnut studio. The intention of the creators was to combine a strategy in the style of Plants vs Zombies with a card game like Magic: The Gathering.
The action of the game takes place in a world in which rebellious robots intend to "modernize" all living beings. The player takes on the role of a wizard and leads an alliance of people and magical creatures who want to stop soulless machines. The main campaign is divided into 26 levels. Additionally, during the game, there is a possibility to unlock 6 bonus levels.
The player's task is to construct a deck of 5-9 cards with spells, e.g. to summon defenders (e.g. elves, centaurs, griffins and dragons), the fighting units or deal damage to enemies. There are a total of 48 types of cards in the game, some of which can be won by fulfilling specific conditions.
Battles in The Trouble With Robots are fought in real-time. Units move in rows and the player s their troops by playing the appropriate cards. The condition for victory is to defeat the opponents attacking you with waves.
The game is distinguished by cartoon graphics with two-dimensional illustrations depicting locations and characters. The Trouble With Robots has humorous accents referring to pop culture.
