Tom Clancy’s The Division Review: It’s decent, but where do we go from here?

Tom Clancy's The Division was supposed to be a terrific game aiming to attract a new kind of players to Ubisoft. Ultimately, we got a mix of ideas that don’t always add up, and you can really feel that the game is missing something.

The Phoenixes of Video Games, or How Flops Become Hits

"Video games as a service" is usually associated with unfair microtransactions, lacking content and watered-down story – but there's more to it. The term also implies an opportunity the devs have to mend the things that don't work properly.

Fonts in console games are definitely too small!

Although we play on bigger and bigger screens and wireless gamepads work even from a distance of a dozen meters, we still have to sit with our noses in TVs in order to be able to enjoy the latest titles comfortably.

Action

The third and the final add-on released as a part of the season for Tom Clancy’s The Division, a popular online action game developed by Ubisoft Massive. In opposition to the two previous expansions – Underground and Survival, Last Stand was released on all three platforms (PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One) simultaneously. The new add-on does not introduce any major changes to multiplayer mechanics, but picks up the various plot threads that began in The Division, taking place in New York paralyzed by a pandemic of an unknown virus. As the of Strategic Homeland Division, the players are trying to contain the chaos that has engulfed the city and deal with the terrorists responsible for the attack. The final expansion introduces new types of enemies, as well as a few additional story missions.

Action

The second paid expansion for Tom Clancy’s The Division, an online action game with RPG elements. Survival, just like the vanilla game, was developed by Ubisoft Massive, a studio experienced with online titles. Similarly to the first add-on, Underground, Survival first debuted on Xbox One and then came out for PC and PlayStation 4 a month later. The Division is a political thriller in which New York is faced with a biological terrorist attack. As a result of it, the metropolis is cut off from the world and its citizens have to fight for their lives. The entire city is mired in chaos but some places are especially dangerous. These so-called Dark Zones, are where the PvP combat happens, and they are the expansion's main focus. As the title suggests, the add-on introduces a survival mode in which players have to survive as long as possible in Dark Zones.

Action

Underground is the first paid expansion that comes as a part of the season for The Division, a multiplayer online action game by Ubisoft Massive. Initially, the DLC was made available for Xbox One and after a month-long period of exclusivity, it came out for other platforms: PC and PlayStation 4. The division is a political thriller the action of which takes place in a plague-torn New York. After the breakout of an epidemic caused by terrorists, the metropolis had been cut off from the world and became mired in chaos. While in the vanilla game we traversed the streets of the Big Apple, the said DLC, just like the title suggests, introduces a system of underground tunnels running under the city. Inside, new story quests and enemies await the players. The Division is focused on playing with other people but a large part of its contents can be explored alone.

Game Rant: 4.5 / 5 by Denny Connolly

The Division delivers on its promise to provide an open-world shooter that scales well enough to play like a single-player campaign or a challenging four player co-op MMO.

IGN: 6.7 / 10 by Vince Ingenito

There's definitely some decent meat to chew on in The Division, but it's usually surrounded by too much gristle to enjoy it for long. Both in combat and out, there are some clearly good ideas, especially the tense and dangerous Dark Zone. But they're not spread evenly or interwoven cleanly enough to form a cohesive, consistently enjoyable loop. Ultimately, The Division's overly busy, conflicted design philosophies drown its best ingredients in a bland slurry that never quite comes together into a cohesive dish.

VG247: 4.5 / 5 by Jaz Rignall

Featuring one of the most remarkable and realistic video game environments ever created, The Division offers a disturbingly dystopian take on a ruined Manhattan. Its action is similarly brutal. Although much of it boils down to firefights and shoot-outs, most are very well executed to deliver truly exciting and thrilling gameplay. Add layers of RPG-like complexity and a really solid storyline, and you have a game that, while occasionally flawed, really does deliver the goods.
