Players take on the role of one of the two available characters and explore the land of Gensokyo in search of a monster threatening it. The title contains arcade elements taken straight from shoot 'em up games in the style of bullet hell.
Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity, released on PC and PS4, is an original action RPG set in the universe of the popular Touhou Project series. The franchise was created by an independent developer named ZUN, who started working on a series of classic 2D shoot'em up games for PC in 1996. They quickly defined a sub-genre called bullet hell shooters. The gallery of hundreds of heroines and their world called Gensokyo has gained a lot of fans all over the world. The Touhou franchise has grown to gigantic proportions and every year its fans produce a huge number of games, comics, books as well as music and animations inspired by it. Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity is the result of this fascination. It was created by independent developers from Ankake Spa studio and was originally released in August 2014 on PC during the largest Japanese comic convention, Comiket.
The heroines of Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity are the 500-year-old vampire Remilia Scarlet and her faithful servant Sakuya Izayoi. Trying to fight boredom, Remilia leaves her property in search of a monster that has been the subject of disturbing rumors for some time - Sakuya is following in her footsteps. Both protagonists have their separate story campaigns, whose stories intersect in several critical moments.
Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity combines elements of action games and RPG. Players see the 3D world from a third-person perspective. However, the camera remains stationary and cannot be controlled directly. Sakuya and Remilia have unique attacks and special skills assigned to specific buttons. Some of them are unlocked as we gain new levels of experience. In addition to standard opponents, we also fight demanding bosses that attack with a storm of missiles, forming complex patterns and shapes.
The 3D graphics of the title are simple, but despite the small budget, the creators managed to achieve satisfactory results. Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity runs in 1080p resolution and at 60 frames per second.
