The plot depicts the adventures of a scientist who, after encountering death, tries to transfer to his monochromatic world the colourful beauty seen on the other side. The production is distinguished by a visual binding stylized on games from the portable Game Boy console.
Two Brothers is the debut work of the independent studio Ackk. The Andrew and Brian Allanson brothers' development tandem attempted to create an action adventure game with a mature storyline and retro-style audiovisual setting. The production was ed by the community of social financing platform Kickstarter.
The main character of Two Brothers is Roy Guarder, an inventor, scientist and philosopher, who sets off on an expedition to determine the sources of life. In the course of the research, the protagonist goes to the Cursed Lands, where he finally finds what he was looking for. At the same time, as a result of a tragic accident, he himself almost loses his life. As a guest on the "other side", he sees the beauty of colours, which are absent in his monochromatic world. Captivated by the obsession with this point, he deliberately begins to cross the line between life and death. Surprisingly, he is the only person who can cross the border of both realities.
The plot of the game is non-linear and has several alternative endings. At the heart of the game is exploring locations, talking to NPCs (often dead game heroes) and fighting enemies. The creators have also prepared a series of puzzles that enrich the gameplay.
From the audiovisual side, Two Brothers is a clear reference to the style of games released on the portable Game Boy console. The two-dimensional graphics draw attention to the strongly accentuated pixel effect and specific colors (one world is monochromatic, while the other has a color palette characteristic of 16-bit computers). The whole aesthetic experience is complemented by an atmospheric soundtrack that accompanies the game.
