The high recognition of the Ironclads series among marine strategy enthusiasts encouraged Totem Games developers to develop their earlier ideas, resulting in the twin Victorian irals series.

The axis of the action Victorian irals: Samoan Crisis 1889 is a fictitious conflict over the title islands. Aiming to dominate one of the last non-colonised areas of the Reich's Oceania, the German Reich is trying to strengthen the power of one of the tribal leaders, leading to the outbreak of civil war. The United States is on the side of the rebels. Both superpowers direct their warships towards the coast of Apia.

Like the Ironclads gameplay mechanisms, the player takes command of the fleet of one of the parties to the conflict and takes part in a series of sea battles. Despite the ahistoric scenario, the models of ships in the game were reproduced on the basis of authentic vessels from that period. This applies not only to their appearance, but also to a number of technical parameters. Noteworthy are the realistic ballistic missile system and the possibility of using many genuine manoeuvres in combat at sea.
