Yomawari: The Long Night Collection is a compilation of two Midnight Shadows. Both titles are stealth games with survival horror traits, developed by Nippon Ichi Software. The game was published on Switch.

Plot

Although both games available in Yomawari: The Long Night Collection take place in modern Japan, they are strongly inspired by the Japanese folklore. In Yomawari: Night Alone, the players assume the role of a young girl who goes to the city in the middle of the night in order to find her lost sister. In Yomawari: Midnight Shadows, the players assume control of Yui and Haru, who have been lost why going back home from mountains. The protagonists of both games quickly discover that the city in which they find themselves is filled with ghosts and monsters.

Mechanics

In the games available in Yomawari: The Long Night Collection, the action is presented with an isometric perspective. The only exceptions are selected levels in the second game, in which the action is presented from a side perspective. During the game, the players are exploring the city that transformed into a nightmare after the nightfall. The players must avoid encountering terrifying creatures. The protagonists aren’t capable of fighting the enemies, so they must sneak past them, hide from their sight, distract them or simply escape from them.

The game features a system that monitors the heartbeat of the girls. When one of the enemies is close, the heart rate becomes higher. This is useful when facing one of the invisible enemies. The protagonists can also use flashlights that enable them to find useful items. The latter can, for example, neutralize the opponents or gain favors from local deities. Both games also feature logic puzzles. The players control the protagonists of the second game one after another and the actions of one of them might impact the fate of another.

Technical aspects

The two-dimensional graphics of games available in Yomawari: The Long Night Collection are of decent quality, mostly due to the cartoon-like style. The use of colors and modest lighting adds a horror atmosphere to the title.
