After yesterday’s huge Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fan sentiment has taken a turn for the worse. If you watched the Direct you might the exciting new a new 3D platformer featuring the iconic Nintendo character. But one other thing you might is that Nintendo was quiet about the new console’s price. Leading up to the reveal, this has been a major point of discussion, so its absence was noticed during the showcase. Turns out Nintendo might have avoided sharing it for a reason.
Fans are not happy with Nintendo Switch 2 console and game prices
The price of the Nintendo Switch 2, and many of the featured games, was revealed on Nintendo’s website shortly after the Direct concluded. The console itself will cost fans $449.99, which is about $50 more than most players were hoping for. Not great, but not too bad. But what really caused an uproar was the revealed price of the new Mario Kart World. The latest entry in the iconic Nintendo racing series will set a new standard for triple A game prices, at $79.99.
This fan uproar appears to have come to a head during today’s Treehouse live stream, where gameplay for many of yesterday’s games was shown. Between 50 and 100 thousand viewers were watching at various points, but throughout the four-hour live stream, the chat was absolutely dominated with viewers spamming the chat with some version of “DROP THE PRICE.” While watching, this message felt like it was nearly every other message sent in the live chat.

These prices were also compounded by Nintendo seeming to squeeze its fans for more money just about everywhere they could. Many games released or intended for the original Switch console The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, they will need to spend more to unlock the superior version, with paid DLC included as well for certain titles.
One that stings perhaps the most is Wii Sports, the game packed in with the Wii console, was a huge success. It was a great way to showcase the new mechanics of the revolutionary system and let everyone familiarize themselves with how to use the new controllers. Why not do something similar with the Switch 2?
Both the Switch 2 upgraded versions and the Switch 2 Welcome Tour controversies appeared in chat in this screenshot, which was taken at a random moment three and a half hours into the live stream. Fans appear to be rallying behind a common cause. We will have to see if Nintendo takes notice. The Nintendo Switch is planned to launch on June 5th, 2025, with pre-orders going live in less than a week.
