“Everyone is here!” Third-party developers show up in force for Nintendo Switch 2 Direct
With studio head after studio head making an appearance in today’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, it brought back feelings of the Nintendo Treehouse live will return to share gameplay of many of the games we saw today. It’s a whole week of Nintendo.
Many of these games are arriving on the Switch 2 with a specified version, so while the Switch 2 is no doubt far more powerful than its predecessor, it’s not quite ready to run the same versions as other consoles or PC yet. This is a little disappointing, but not wholly unexpected. This came up in the reveal of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. But it’s still amazing that all these games will be playable on a Nintendo console.
But many games did not need a “Switch 2 version.” Supergiant’s Street Fighter 6 will have two versions, but one just means it will include all of the characters from years one and two. Notably, Street Fighter 6 characters will be available as Amiibos on the same day as the Switch 2 launch. Hazelight’s co-op hit from earlier this year, Split Fiction, doesn’t appear to have any difference with its Switch 2 version. This great game will feel right at home on this new console.
2023’s best-selling game, Project 007 for the first time during today’s Direct.
Some of the biggest announcements came from a few indie games. The release date for the long awaited third and fourth chapters of Deltarune, from the maker of Undertale, were announced today. These new chapters will arrive on the day the Nintendo Switch launches. Hollow Knight: Silksong was relegated to a sizzle reel, but did confirm a potential 2025 release date. Considering this is the first update of any kind in a long time, it is quite significant. Hollow Knight fans will be going crazy for this one for a while.
The list goes on: Star Wars Outlaws also made a brief appearance in the sizzle reel, hoping to find more of an audience on the new console.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new console if Fortnite wasn’t available from day one. The Nintendo Switch 2 has set itself up for success. Nintendo is just one developer, so having back up like this from third-party partners is going to make this new console worthwhile for many people. It’s also exciting to see that many games will be experimenting with mouse controls and other features. This is looking like an exciting time to be a fan of Nintendo.
