The long-rumored remake of Final Fantasy Tactics was finally confirmed during today’s PlayStation State of Play. Both the classic and an enhanced version are packaged together in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. The original version was released in 1998 for the first PlayStation console and is finally arriving on modern consoles this Fall. The trailer also revealed a release date of September 30th.

Two versions of Final Fantasy Tactics are coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4

The classic version of Final Fantasy Tactics, included in this remake, combines the pixel-art graphics with the renowned War of the Lions translation. Meanwhile, the enhanced version introduces voice acting, extensive additions and adjustments to the story, and a renewed interface. For long-time fans of this entry in the popular Final Fantasy series, the enhanced version will be a new way to experience the game.

Despite being a beloved spinoff of the popular RPG series, Final Fantasy Tactics has yet to have a true sequel. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was released in 2008 for the Game Boy Advance, but that is only considered an indirect sequel. The main Final Fantasy series has also been turning away from the classic turn-based battles that a tactics game is locked into by design.

This latest remaster doesn’t appear to be much of a graphical upgrade, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, the charm of the pixelated graphics seems to be somewhat smoothed out in images of the new version. Given the Tactics series' past relationships with Nintendo, I am also curious to hear if this version will arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in the future. Perhaps that announcement will be released sometime this week during another showcase. For now, we’ll have to wait to learn more. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles arrives on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on September 30th, 2025.
