Journal in Elden Ring Nightreign covers more than just lore
Reading and completing the Journal in Elden Ring Nightreign carries more tangible rewards than just learning the plot.

FromSoftware games are always full of lore, more or less clear elements of the plot, the discovery of which requires additional effort from the player. Usually, you figure it out by reading item descriptions, observing your surroundings, or completing tricky side quests. In Elden Ring: Nightreign, you have access to a journal that seems to serve that exact function. In the journal, you'll find personal stories of each playable character, learning about their past, and making progress with a given character will reward you with extra entries. However, this is not the only use of the journal, thanks to which you can gain much more tangible rewards than just lore. In this article, we describe what Remembrances are all about.
What are Remembrances?
Remembrances are side quests assigned to each of the playable characters. Playing a given character gradually unlocks entries in his or her personal journey. Some entries are related to Remembrances - you might get a message in the bottom right corner of the screen when you come back from an expedition to let you know they're available. When the Remembrance becomes available, you can activate it in the journal in the Roundtable Hold. Occasionally, other playable characters also appear in some Remembrances. So, make sure to unlock the initially unavailable characters - Duchess and Revenant, as soon as possible, to address potential issues with obtaining Remembrances. For example, in the first Remembrance, Duchess will have to talk to Revenant, so the memory will be unavailable until you unlock Revenant.
Each Remembrance is a side quest, and while playing it you will have to play the character assigned to it. Changing the character will interrupt the Remembrance - you will be able to do it again, but its progress will be reset, and you will have to start it from the beginning. So it's better not to change the character until the Remembrance is completed. For every completed Remembrance, you'll receive a reward for the specific character. This could be unique relics, new spells, new chalices allowing for the use of different relic combinations, or even items enabling the achievement of alternative endings after defeating the final lord of the night.
To unlock Remembrances, you have to play as a certain character, and after some time, a new Remembrance will unlock. However, there are two blockades that stop new Remembrances from appearing. A new Remembrance won't become available until you complete the previous one. It may also be unavailable to you until you defeat the next Nightlord. Blocking Remembrances doesn't mean you'll have to unblock them again. Once the block is removed, like when you finish the previous memory or start a new expedition, all the pending Remembrances should become available right away.
How to complete Remembrances?
Fortunately, doing Remembrances is much simpler than the heavily convoluted side quests typical of FromSoftware. Upon activation of the Remembrance, the edge of the screen in the Roundtable Hold will become slightly blurred. This means that you can make progress in Remembrance, and changing characters will reset your progress. Open the map and find the yellow exclamation mark icon on it. It will most often mark one of the characters living in the fortress. Talk to the characters until you exhaust all of their dialogue lines. The next step is usually to go on an expedition.
A red marker for a personal quest will appear on the expedition map, where you need to go. There, you usually face a boss fight or a special item to find. Complete the goal, and then reach the end of the run - it no longer matters whether you win or fall. Only one player at a time can have their personal quest active. If you play with random players, matchmaking will only assign you to players without active Remembrances. If you're playing with friends and a few of you have active Remembrances at the same time, the game will prioritize and display only the host player's quest.
After achieving your personal goal and returning to the Roundtable Hold, you will have to talk once again with several characters marked with exclamation marks. Keep doing it until you run out of exclamation marks again. Then you can return to the journal and there finish the Remembrance, for which you will receive a reward. Each character has several Remembrances to do during their personal storyline. So, it is worth doing them, especially if you like the character's playstyle - you will learn more about the character's story and gain relics that buff them.
