1. - Shenmue
The first place may surprise many of you, as it is Shenmue - a Japanese game released in 1999. The title introduced elements to games that have since become the norm in the industry and are used by series such as Grand Theft Auto and Assassin’s Creed.
Shenmue was primarily one of the first real sandbox games. The player could explore an open, "living" world where every NPC had their own routines and activities, to which we had to adapt. This element was complemented by the daily and weather cycle, influencing the gameplay.
BAFTA points out that Shenmue can be seen as a precursor to Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, and some of the more open stages from games like Uncharted 4 or God of War could also have taken cues from it. Furthermore, the spirit of the game is still supposed to be clearly present in the Yakuza series.
