Nintendo Switch 2 game sizes revealed
Thanks to the Japan eShop, Nintendo fans now have an idea of how they'll be using the 256 GB of internal storage on their future Nintendo Switch 2 console.

Nintendo has revealed the size of many of its new Nintendo Switch 2 titles via the Japan eShop, shared by delaying pre-orders in the U.S. to evaluate the effects of new tariffs introduced earlier this week.

The new Nintendo console will have far more internal storage than the original Switch, which launched at 32 GB. For s who focus on physical game cards, this is not much of a problem. But if you try to a few of the major Nintendo releases digitally, you will quickly find this space is not enough. The Nintendo Switch 2 will thankfully feature 256 GB of internal storage, eight times what was offered on the original Switch. This is also great news considering the microSD cards that were once lifesavers for eShop s will no longer be compatible with the new hardware. Switch 2 s will need to purchase microSD express cards instead.
The Switch 2 may have more digital storage space than its predecessor, but the games will also be significantly larger. Thankfully not eight times as large, though. Unsurprisingly, the largest of them all is Mario Kart World, which will be 23.4 GB. Compare that to the 11.2 GB of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is 16.4 GB. Hopefully this is an indicator that the $80 price tag will be worth it.
Super Mario Odyssey, the latest major Nintendo 3D platformer from 2017, was a little more than half that at 5.7 GB. GameCube Nintendo Classics, the new collection exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, will be 3.5 GB. This makes sense compared to the Nintendo 64 collection at 1.7 GB.
Finally, there is some info about a few games that are getting Kirby and the Forgotten Land will actually decrease in size somehow, going from 5.8 GB to 5.7 GB on the Switch 2 even with a story expansion.
For the most part, this is nothing major. Mario Kart World is certainly huge, it may end up being the biggest first-party Nintendo title of all time. Though we have yet to see the sizes for other new titles, such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This file size might not be a big deal, but with the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle only including a digital copy of the game, Nintendo fans are left with two choices. Save on Mario Kart World’s $80 price tag and accept 23.4 GB or save the storage space and pay $80. It’s not a position many players are happy about.
