Sometimes Steam updates slip under the radar, whether it's something small, like warnings for neglected Early Access games. That means we might miss out on new features and quality-of-life improvements without even realizing it, like one that's especially handy for RPGs with huge maps.
Steam Notes have been around for a while now, but not everyone even knows they exist. No more jotting down chest locations in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 on your smartphone, you can easily create them right through the Steam Overlay.
How to use Steam Notes to keep track of everything in your games
The Steam Overlay got a major overhaul in the Steam Desktop Update on April 27, 2023. Originally, it was just a quick way to chat with friends and look up game info, but since then, it's gained a ton of new features. One of them was the Notes, which lets you take multiple memos per game and even works offline.
You can bring the Overlay by holding Shift+Tab, then click on the pencil icon (third from the left) to start writing.
Your notes are saved per game and sync across all your PCs, and even Steam Deck. You can access them from the in-game overlay or on the game’s details page in your library (right side of the screen).
If you’re wondering where they’re stored locally, you can find them here:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\data\(your ID#)\2371090\remote
The only downside is that they don’t sync with the mobile app. Hopefully, Valve adds that in the future.
This can be useful for tracking achievements, making small reminders, or keeping notes on quest details. Some games (especially certain remasters or remakes) still have limited or even nonexistent quest logs and map marker systems. Take Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for example. With Steam Notes, you can easily mark important locations, secret areas, navigate maze-like maps, or key story clues – all in one place.
