Wargaming has reasons to be dissatisfied. Steel Hunters isn’t going to repeat the success of World of Tanks, even though the ratings have gone up

It’s a shaky start for Wargaming’s latest experiment. Steel Hunters struggles to gain traction.

Steel Hunters, doesn’t seem to be hitting the mark with fans.

A promising concept that’s falling short

Steel Hunters flips the script on vehicular combat with mechs in a PvPvE battle royale. Players not only face off against each other but also AI enemies, scavenging for better gear while the play area keeps shrinking. Unlike Wargaming’s usual historical games, Steel Hunters features mechs with futuristic abilities and weapons. The game’s more focused on upgrading during the match than long-term progression, and while you can team up, it’s really geared more toward solo survival.

Steel Hunters hit Early Access on April 2, 2025, after the closed beta, but it only peaked at 4,479 concurrent players. Now, a week later, it’s down to just over 2,000 players on Steam. The number could be higher since Wargaming has its own launcher, but it's probably even fewer players there.

Right now, the game has only 56% positive reviews on Steam, and it was even worse right after launch, hovering around 30-40%. While the core concept is still solid, there are some big issues. No voice chat in a modern game is a huge letdown, and the gameplay quickly gets repetitive. The main objectives don’t offer much variety, and the limited content makes it lose its appeal. Pretty much everyone’s saying the same thing: the game feels unfinished and a couple of years too late.

Steel Hunter feels like a game that stumbled out of 2018 and somehow found its way into 2025. Unfortunately, it brings nothing new to the table

I love the designs and how heavy the bots feel, but at the end of the day it’s another battle royale posing as an extraction shooter.

auto Graphic settings doesn't work properly because it has failed to recognise the right screen resolution and the right graphic card.

It’s looking pretty unlikely that Steel Hunters will become Wargaming's next big title. But if it somehow does take off, there’s definitely a lot of work ahead.

Been with gamepressure.androidapks.biz since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or iring my collection of retro consoles.
