What is Kalkite from Star Wars? Here's why Ghorman has become a target in Andor
Find out what it is about Kalkite that drew the Empire's attention to Ghorman in Andor.

Warning! Below are spoilers from Andor season 2.
second and final season of the series. The production is supposed to tell four years of Cassian's life just before the beginning of Rogue One, to which it is supposed to lead. And we've just got through the first year, or rather an excerpt of it, from which we could learn about the life of the main character and his friends after escaping from Ferrix, as well as the price Mon Mothma is paying for the Rebellion and the Empire's plans.
And let's now focus precisely on the Empire's plans, which are extremely disturbing. As we've learned, the Empire's attention has turned to Ghorman, the planet where the highest quality fabrics come from. Why would such a place interest the Emperor? Luxury goods in the ongoing war are not the key issue. It's about something completely different, which Ghorman is not at all famous for – the deposits hidden on this planet, which are of great value.
In Andor, we heard about the Kalkite located on Ghorman. Krennic revealed that the Empire is interested in this ore, as energy can be extracted from Kalkite, which would enable the Empire to be energy independent. Instead of manufacturing synthetic alternatives, they could dig the real Kalkite out of Ghorman, which they intend to do at any price, and that price could be very high. Kalkite mining could lead to the destruction of the planet, "The extent of our withdrawal may render the planet unstable. It's gouge mining. There would be stress on the planet's core."
Kalkite is thus a valuable ore, as it is a source of energy that could be useful, among other things, for the Death Star, which, as we know thanks to Andor's first season finale, is currently under construction and is certainly a priority for the Empire – it is to be their most powerful weapon, after all.
