Why is Ellie angry at Joel?
These are not the same Joel and Ellie that TLOU season 1 showed us. But what actually happened between these two between seasons to strain their relationship to this degree? What could have made Ellie so angry with Joel to this point?
The answer is found in the events of the season 1 finale. Recall that at that time Ellie's immunity was to be used to invent a cure, however, it was to be at the expense of Ellie's life, which Joel could not accept. Consequently, he killed everyone involved in the process of using the Ellie, whom he did not tell the truth about those events.
But what does it matter if Joel concealed the truth from her? The answer is provided by the game, from which we learned that 2 years before the events of episode 1 of season 2 of The Last of Us, Ellie escaped from Jackson and went to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where she was able to see the site of the massacre committed by Joel. As a result, she realized that not only had he made the decision for her and placed a huge burden on her shoulders in of living at the expense of a potential cure, but he had also lied to her.
Ellie confronted Joel with her discovery and after returning to Jackson, she decided that everything between her and Joel was over.
