8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure is an action platform game, so called metroidvania. It was developed by the indie Rootless Studio team, while its release was handled by NeoWiz Games. The main source of inspiration for this project was Korean folk tales.

Plot

In 8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure, we play the role of a girl named Arum. The search for her father's soul led the protagonist to the afterlife, or more precisely - to purgatory. Traversing this gloomy land and crossing another of the title's eight doors, our protagonist faces dangers, helps afflicted souls, and learns more and more about the place.

Game mechanics

8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure is a side-scroller. The adventure takes us through eight diverse areas of Purgatory. While traversing them, Arum jumps on platforms and avoids numerous traps, gets to know the residents of Purgatory and helps them solve the problems plaguing them, as well as faces numerous adversaries.

In addition to serial adversaries, much more powerful bosses stand in the girl's way, the defeat of which requires working out the patterns of their attacks and discovering their weaknesses. The battles are dynamic, and on the battlefield we have to be in constant motion, perform quick evasions and launch lightning-fast counterattacks, as well as combine attacks into spectacular combinations. The protagonist makes use of seven types of weapons (both for close combat and for attacking enemies from a safe distance) and various combat abilities.

As we progress, we gain more and better weapons and improve the ones we already have, as well as develop the heroine's skills. Thanks to this, over time we can not only face more and more powerful enemies, but also get to previously inaccessible places. The latter makes it worthwhile to return to already visited locations, in search of previously undiscovered secrets.

Technical aspects

Graphics in 8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure is made in the original cartoon style, using only three colors: red, black and white. Character animations were drawn by hand, frame by frame.
