Release Date: April 18, 2016
A remastered version of 1998's Battlezone, combining elements of action and RTS games. Developer Rebellion focused on enhancing visual resolution and upgrading the interface, while keeping gameplay almost identical to the original edition. Therefore, Battlezone 98 offers the same original single player campaigns presenting an alternative version of the Cold War.
Developed by Rebellion studio, Battlezone 98 Redux for PC is a remake of the innovative title Battlezone from 1998, which combined elements of action and RTS games. The developers concentrated on enhancing resolution and upgrading the interface, while they kept gameplay almost identical to the base-version.
The production recreates the events known from the original game released in 1998 and includes single player campaigns. The action takes place during 1960s, when the space race between the USA and Soviet Russia serves as a cover for a more important war over control of Solar System’s planets and moons. The reason for the conflict is simple – resources, namely bio-metal, which allows for inventing technologies far suring traditional ones. Once pieces of this substance fell on Earth in the form of meteorites, the great powers were able to produce first spaceships, and go to war over planets rich in bio-metal reserves. Battlezone 98 Redux introduces two single player campaigns – each for one side of the conflict. The scenario revolves not only around military operations, but also gives you a chance to learn more about the alien race, which created bio-metal.
In Battlezone 98 Redux published on PC the player observes the action from the cockpit of a futuristic tank and spends lots of time on vehicle-to-vehicle combats. Also, RTS elements play a crucial role – gather bio-metal, which is an only resource, expand the base, improve technology, produce units and lead them to battles against the enemy. Each strategic action is taken in the tank cockpit, which makes giving orders and grasping of events more difficult. It heavily influences gameplay mechanics and makes Battlezone 98 Redux different from typical RTS games.
Apart from single player campaigns, Battlezone 98 Redux offers three multiplayer modes. In the first one, called Strategy, both sides fight over resources, build bases, and wage war against each other. The Deathmatch mode abandons all strategic elements and concentrates solely on battles between tanks controlled by players. The last mode – Sniper – conceptually resembles Deathmatch, but here you fight by using long-distance cannons.
