A two-dimensional brawl that debuted on PlayStation 1, and after many years also reached other platforms. Guilty Gear takes us into the future, when man-made, animated weapons have turned against their creators; as we struggle, we participate in a tournament whose winner will have to face their leader, the Testament.
Guilty Gear is a classic fighting game developed by Arc System Works. The production made its debut on PlayStation 1, and in the following years it also found its way to a number of other platforms, including modern desktop consoles, handhelds and personal computers.
The story told in Guilty Gear begins in 2010, when people managed to discover an unlimited source of energy, which they quickly baptize as "magic". Thanks to it, civilization started developing rapidly - one of the inventions were the living weapon known as "Gears", which over time turned against their creators, starting a global war. Gears were led by Justice, who was defeated only after a hundred years of constant fighting, thus putting an end to the murderous zeal of the Gears. We move on to the year 2180, when a Gear known as Testament, plans to resurrect Justice and wipe humanity out of the face of the Earth once and for all. In order to put an end to his plot, people organize a tournament - the winner will be given the task of defeating Testament and restoring the order.
The action in Guilty Gear is shown from the side. During the game we take part in dynamic battles, leading one of the ten heroes (their list is supplemented by three hidden characters); the list includes such figures as knights of the holy order that faced the Gears in the past, as well as soldiers, of the mafia or crazy scientists. Each character has a unique fighting style and special attacks; some also use weapons. The clashes take place in two-dimensional arenas, and in addition to a set of standard moves (punch, kick, weapon attacks) during the game we make use of special moves, led by instant K.O. moves, ending the round in a flash.
When fighting an opponent, two indicators should be closely monitored. Taking damage not only empties the life bar, but also charges so-called tension, which, when filled, makes the character stronger and able to use powerful Chaos Attacks. It is worth ing that if a player's health drops to a critical level, he is surrounded by a red aura, and their Chaos Attacks become unlimited.
Guilty Gear has three game variants, the most important of which is the single player Arcade Mode; it is here that we get to know the motivations of each fighter and follow their story. In addition, there is the multiplayer Versus Mode (available on stationary consoles and PCs) and a training mode in which we can learn the fighting style of each hero.
Guilty Gear's graphics adopt the manga style. Compared to the original, its later ports did not introduce major changes in the audiovisuals - the whole thing was adapted only to operate at higher resolutions and to work with widescreen displays.
