Hammerwatch: Anniversary Edition is a remastered and enriched with additional content version of the warmly received hack'n'slash titled Hammerwatch, released in 2013. The remaster was developed by the independent studio Crackshell, which oversees the development of the series.

Plot

The action of Hammerwatch: Anniversary Edition takes place in a fantasy world. The titular Hammerwatch is a castle where Lord Archibald resides, being a puppet on the throne of a dragon known as Blight the Horrible. During the game, we play as daredevils who decide to venture into the labyrinths spreading under this fortress, to reach the sinister reptile and try to confront it.

In addition to the two campaigns known from the original - Hammerwatch Castle and the Temple of the Sun - this edition of the game gives us a third adventure - Shaftlocke Tower.

Mechanics

In Hammerwatch: Anniversary Edition we watch the action from a top-down perspective. During the game we take control of heroes representing various character classes, among which there are new professions unavailable in the original. The specializations of heroes affect their preferred weapons and combat skills.

We explore locations and face hordes of enemies. As we progress, we grow in strength, acquiring better equipment, which we buy or find, and also unlocking increasingly powerful abilities. The remaster implements a new equipment system and new character personalization options, such as additional voices and color palettes.

Hammerwatch: Anniversary Edition can be played solo or cooperatively both online and locally.

Technical aspects

Hammerwatch: Anniversary Edition stands out from the original thanks to refreshed graphics. The visuals are still maintained in a pixel art style that refers to titles from the era of eight and sixteen bits. Tools for creating mods are also available here for those interested, allowing players to develop their own content.
