A continuation of a stylish old-school platform game that had us travel through Aztec ruins as Lemeza Kosugi, an agile archeologist similar to Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones. La-Mulana 2 enables us to assume the role of the daughter of that hero, who had turned out just like her father, traveling through mysterious, inaccessible locations while wearing her trademark hat.

La-Mulana 2 for PC is a continuation of an old-school platform game that saw us travel through ancient Aztec ruins playing as a resourcefull archeologist not unlike the Spielberg’s Indiana Jones. The original title, released in 2005 in Japan, was developed as a free-to-play project modeled after cult-classic MSX games. The game received a worldwide Nintendo Wii and PC release seven years later, which contributed to its popularity. Interestingly enough, La-Mulana 2 is a PC only title, with possible console releases in the near future.

Plot

In the second installment the players assume control of the daughter of Lemeza Kosugi – the hero known from La-Mulana. The daughter has proved to be exactly as her father, becoming an adventure seeker, traversing mysterious, inaccessible locations wearing her trademark hat and whip. This time, the action takes us to Scandinavia, introducing a plot influenced by Nordic legends.

Mechanics

The mechanics of the gameplay are similar to those known from Castlevania or Metroid series. The player focuses on exploring dangerous levels containing inventive traps and powerful enemies, including challenging bosses. We begin the game armed with a whip, which can be exchanged for other useful weapons as the game progresses. To buy equipment, we need to amass various goods and treasures found along the way – our path leads through numerous levels, each of them requiring precision and agility.

Technical Aspects

Graphics are designed in a style similar to La-Mulana, including retro 8-bit graphics with large pixels. The graphic engine itself had undergone numerous changes, introducing for widescreen resolutions, the lack of which was one of the biggest downsides of the first game.
