Platoon Commander is a strategy game set during World War II. It was developed by Alpharabius Games studio, while its release was handled by Slitherine, a company specialized in this genre.

Historical period

The action of Platoon Commander is set in the autumn and winter of 1941. While German troops march on Moscow, trying to break into the Soviet capital before the snowfall and severe frosts, the Red Army must do everything in its power to prevent the invaders from achieving this goal. During the game, we can both stand on the side of the defenders or take control of the aggressor's forces.

Sides of the conflict

The gameplay in Platoon Commander takes place on maps covering Soviet territories located on the way to Moscow. Depending on which side of the barricade we pick, we have to face different challenges, and we also get different units at our disposal. For example, Wehrmacht is equipped with anti-tank rifles Panzerbuchse 1939, assault guns StuG III B and armored vehicles Sd.Kfz 222. Red Army soldiers use PPSh-41 submachine guns, as well as T-34 Model 1940 tanks and KV-1 L-11 tanks.

In the first phase of the game, has an easier campaign, thanks to superior supply lines and better trained soldiers. Meanwhile, the Red Army, exhausted by combat, must fill gaps in its forces with the help of the militia. However, over time the situation changes dramatically, because the closer to Moscow, the more soldiers and better supplies reach the front on the Soviet side, and the more strained the German logistics become.

Tactical battles

The gameplay in Platoon Commander takes place on two levels, so to speak. Apart from the campaign map, where we make strategic decisions in turn-based mode, we also fight real-time battles here, where tactics matter. Our tactics should be determined not only based on the number or type of troops possessed, but also taking into the topography of the terrain, the time of day and weather conditions, as well as the psychological state of the units.

Military operations can significantly affect the environment. Although the buildings provide soldiers with almost complete invisibility, they can still be destroyed. The situation is similar with forests, because although shrubs, tall grass and trees provide excellent cover, there is nothing to prevent them from being leveled to the ground by intense bombings. On the other hand, the game also allows us to artificially influence the visibility of our units, using tools like smoke screens. The visibility of soldiers is also related to the time of day and atmospheric conditions. Moreover, they affect the combat effectiveness of our subordinates. We can use the of heavy artillery or aviation only when the weather is favorable to us.

The last key to success is taking care of the morale of the units. Staying near allies (preferably in the form of tanks) can increase the combat potential of our soldiers, while suffering heavy losses or being under heavy fire significantly reduces it, in extreme cases leading to defeat.
