RPG enriched with elements of roguelike and strategy, developed by CC studio. The Last Spell takes us to a dark universe where every night people defend themselves against hordes of monsters and heal wounds and strengthen their fortress during the day.
The Last Spell is an RPG enriched with elements taken from roguelikes and strategy games. The game was developed by the independent French studio CC, having in their portfolio such titles as Dead in Bermuda and Dead in Vinland.
The Last Spell is set in a fantasy world, which, as a result of a long war and what is known as the cataclysm, was on the verge of annihilation. During the latter, the magicians summoned a mysterious fog, from which hordes of bloodthirsty monsters emerge under the cover of night. Those who chose to cross its borders have either gone missing or returned as men or monsters. The few who survived the cataclysm have locked themselves in fortresses where they repel the attacks of hordes of murderous creatures every night. In one of such fortresses, the last wizards try to cast the eponymous last spell to destroy the evil magic and, with it, the deadly fog. The players take control of a group of warriors whose task is to defend the mages from the forces of darkness and to defend the last bastion of humanity.
The events in which we take part in The Last Spell are shown in isometric view. The game has been divided into two stages; during the day we deal with healing, obtaining useful resources and objects, as well as developing the fortress (such as constructing and repairing defensive walls or setting traps), under the cover of night we move on to defensive actions. Clashes with the hordes of adversaries, led by powerful bosses, take place in turn-based mode, and their success is ensured by the skillful use of the abilities and equipment of each of the heroes.
As they progress, protagonists earn experience points, advance to new levels, learn a variety of combat skills, and gain useful perks, so that they can face ever-increasing challenges over time. It is worth noting that the character progression system implemented in the game is not divided into classes. Moreover, both maps and characters, as well as their equipment and finally the waves of enemies are generated procedurally, which increases the replayability of the game.
Pixel art visuals of The Last Spell adopt a dark style, which is complemented by atmospheric soundtrack.

Game Ratings for The Last Spell Video Game.
COGconnected: 90 / 100 by Jaina Hill
The Last Spell made me realize that a siege is the perfect video game scenario. It allows you to focus on a single area, and gives the player a chance to customize their base. It also lends itself to a small group of heroes standing bravely against a horde of faceless enemies. Combine that with other popular features such as roguelike development, and you have a pretty fun game. But spend some time with The Last Spell, and you will see how differently it plays.
Hey Poor Player: 4 / 5 by Shane Boyle
Overall, The Last Spell is an incredibly fresh and satisfying entry to the strategy RPG genre. Its learning curve may be brutal, but that’s part of its charm as you slowly chip away at its many progression systems and start catching glimpses of light at the end of the demon-infested tunnel. If you can learn to live with the clunky controls and don’t mind a slow grind that rewards the patient, you’ll uncover some of the best, most frantic combat to grace the genre in some time, and it’s a sandbox of satisfying systems and enemy density that will have you returning over and over again. If you’re looking for something a little different and don’t mind being repeatedly humbled, then The Last Spell is totally worth your time.
Prima Games: 8 / 10 by Nikola Loncar
The Last Spell caught my eye by ticking all boxes that could form a good game for me: Roguelite, RPG, Pixel Graphics, and Turn-Based Strategy.
