The Waylanders is an RPG set in Spain, in two periods that divide several centuries. The player controls a hero who travels in time and tries to discover the causes of the monster invasion. The production combines historical truth with fantastic elements inspired by the mythology of the lands where the plot takes place.
The Waylanders is an RPG game that combines historical and fantastical elements. The project was developed by the Spanish studio Gato Salvaje. A key role in the production was played by Mike Laidlaw, the father of the first three installments of the Dragon Age series.
The action takes place in the north of Spain, in two historical periods. In the first, the areas are under the control of Celtic tribes, and the second shows these lands in the late Middle Ages when pagan beliefs and culture were replaced by Christianity. The game's world combines historical accuracy with fantastical elements derived from the beliefs of people who lived in those times.
Both of these time planes have been connected by a theme of reincarnation. Only the main character is able to physically travel in time. In the case of the remaining team , we have to find new incarnations of old companions and make them their previous lives.
The plot revolves around the invasion of the forces of darkness on Earth. The player also has to deal with the chaos in human power structures and discover what unites the two problems.
The game's chief designer, Mike Laidlaw, has worked for many years in BioWare studio and The Waylanders refers to the solutions associated with this developer. We get a classic RPG, in which we lead a team of adventurers. While having fun, we explore the world, complete quests, develop characters and fight.
The game has a real-time combat system with the option of an active pause, which allows us to stop the action at any time and give orders to our characters. The Waylanders offers six basic classes, each of which introduces two formations into the party - we can use a total of twelve formations during the fights.
An interesting element of the game is the fact that historical periods are closely connected, so decisions and actions in the past influence the future. This plays a key role in many quests that may require different actions done at different times. Interestingly, there is nothing to prevent the same characters from having different specializations in different periods.
The graphics of The Waylanders are done in full 3D and the game allows you to play the game by using a bird's eye view as well as with a camera located behind the main character's back.

As such it is hard to recommend The Waylanders in its current form. Although it is charming and enthusiastic, its slapdash quality seriously hampers the overall quality of the experience. A middling narrative and minor bugs are easy to overlook if the overall game is enjoyable - which The Waylanders is - but potentially game-breaking issues will erode any good will the title may have gained.

The Waylanders tries to imitate a variety of mechanics from leaders of the RPG genre, but fails to implement any of them effectively, while offering nothing original apart from the astonishingly poor dialogue.

When The Waylanders succeeds, the game is one of the most solid experiences I've had all year. But those successes are few and far between, while the rest of the title fails to keep itself afloat among a sea of bugs and poorly thought out gameplay decisions.
