Some time ago, Nvidia released tools to help modders create unofficial remasters of classic games. One of the first projects to make use of these tools is Need for Speed: Underground RTX Remix. The modification recently received a new version, numbered 0.4.1.

The main advantage of Nvidia's tools is the ability to add ray tracing to old games, and that’s exactly what this mod does for Need for Speed: Underground. A significant portion of the game's lighting has been fully recreated using this technology, and over 1,000 additional lights have been added to maps to maximize the effect. However, the changes don’t stop there.

  1. The mod also replaces many textures with new, high-resolution versions.
  2. Since version 0.2.1, the process of gradually improving car models has begun—while this effort is far from complete, the already implemented new versions look noticeably better.

Version 0.4.1 introduced for DLSS 4, as well as volumetric fog and particle effects. The appearance of buildings has also been improved to make them seem more “rough” in texture.

The modification is quite impressive, especially considering it’s created by a single enthusiast (alessandro893). Not everything is perfectly refined yet, and many old elements still await enhancement, but even now, the mod is an exciting option for Need for Speed: Underground fans. The project benefits greatly from the fact that the game’s setting takes place in cities at night—such an environment is ideal for utilizing ray tracing, and the mod makes great use of this advantage.

It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the only fan-made project refreshing Need for Speed: Underground. If you don’t like the ray-traced visuals or simply don’t have a powerful enough PC to handle the technology, you might want to check out the older Definitive Edition mod, which bundles smaller projects improving nearly every aspect of this classic, including textures, models, and lighting.
