Today, Spilled! from developer Lente, was released on Steam. This relaxing simulation game tasks the player with cleaning polluted waters. Scoop up oil and gather litter to return the waterways to their pristine conditions. As you progress, you’ll earn a currency that can be spent to upgrade our boat’s abilities. A larger scoop to better collect pollutants, or a larger tank to store what’s been collected before having to return to empty it. While there is an urgency to save the environment, Spilled! doesn’t put pressure on the player to complete anything within a certain time frame or in a certain way. It’s one of the most satisfying games I’ve ever played.

This new indie game reminds me of one of my favorites from 2023: Terra Nil. The gameplay is different, of course, but the concept of restoring a natural habitat connects the two. Like Terra Nil, Spilled! allows the player to approach the task at their own pace. Spilled! is also a very short game, expected to take roughly one hour to complete all eight levels. It is appropriately priced, at only $5.99 on Steam, plus a 10% discount for its first week of availability.

Aside from its gloriously casual and relaxing gameplay, Spilled! also uses its colorful pixel-art style wonderfully. While the focus is on the water, there are so many great details to take in on the surrounding landscapes. Plus, as the water is cleaned up, you’ll see wildlife return in the form of sea turtles and coral reefs full of colorful fish.

This is the debut game from solo-developer Lente, who apparently spent much of the time working on Spilled! living on a boat. Lente launched a Kickstarter campaign in January 2024 and Spilled! was fully funded just twelve hours after its launch, eventually reaching three times its original goal.

The campaign hit all its stretch goals, including the inclusion of a simple story and the final goal of an “end boss.” While I haven’t had the time to get that far yet (thankfully I know I will later today since it’s only an hour), I am very curious what a boss fight would look like in this game, if it even falls into that description. Spilled! is out now on PC via Steam, though I would not be surprised to see this game find its way onto consoles sometime soon. Especially the Nintendo Switch, it feels like a perfect fit for a handheld.
