The gates of Oblivion are keeping not only Emperor Uriel Septim awake, but also countless fans who have started re-exploring Cyrodill. Besides obvious fixing minor issues, others cannot enjoy the game fully due to a fatal error that erases their progress. Fortunately, the solution is quite simple to implement, so stick around to learn how to do it.
Fix for fatal error in TES Oblivion Remastered
While Bethesda The Elder Scrolls series, Oblivion Remastered has suddenly dropped, taking Steam by storm (via SteamDB), and we cannot forget that the title is available in Xbox Game , too. However, not everyone has a smooth experience with this game, as a fatal error on quitting is plaguing some of the fans, completely erasing their progress. What to do about it, then?
Players discovered that the solution is fairly simple. It appears that Windows Defender blocks a crucial process that is responsible for writing the save games on your hard drive. To if that’s indeed the issue in your case, follow the steps below:
Widows Defender method
As you deal with your PC security, make sure that you pick proper files. You use this fix at your own risk.
- Open Windows Security by going to start menu and looking for it.
- Select Virus & threat protection (Windows 10) or skip to the next step (Windows 11).
- Next, pick Protection history and look for entries saying “Protected folder access blocked”.
- If you see records showing blocked path as below, if those come from executables like “steam.exe” and “OblivionRemastered-Win64-Shipping.exe”.
C:\s\[name]\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\SaveGames
This is the default location of the documents folder. It can differ slightly especially if you use One Drive, for example, then the path might look more like:
C:\s\[name]\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\SaveGames
Obviously, the [name] part of the path should be substituted by your own name.
- With both of those located, make sure to click on “Actions” dropdown menu and select “Allow on Device”. Again, it should be done for both of the entries - “steam.exe” and “OblivionRemastered-Win64-Shipping.exe”.
A new folder method
There is also another way to fix the issue, which seems much simpler.
- In the Start menu search for %profile%.
- Next, go to Documents and open My Games folder.
- Now, create the Oblivion Remastered folder.
- In Oblivion Remastered, create the Saved folder.
- In Saved, create the SaveGames folder.
Hopefully, with all of that done, you will be able to dive into the vast world of Cyrodill without having to worry about progress loss. It would be a great idea to test the solution first by saving after a couple of minutes of gameplay instead of immediately going for full play session, potentially losing hours again. Good luck!
