Another installment of the critically acclaimed strategy games series launched in 2000 by Battlefront.com. Combat Mission: Final Blitzkrieg for PC is another installment in the critically acclaimed strategy games series, Combat Mission, which was initiated in 2000 by a group of experienced developers a Battlefront.com. The title is another product of the miniseries that focuses on the battles fought at the end of the World War II.
The action takes place in times of the World War II and focuses on battles of the Western Front between October, 1944, and January, 1945, although a greater emphasis was put on the last two winter months when the famous German offensive in the Ardennes took place. The title offers three separate story campaigns (and a training one) that let us assume command over American or German forces and take part in a number of historical battles fought in Belgium, Netherlands, , and .
Gameplay-wise, Combat Mission: Final Blitzkrieg—similarly to the entire series— is a classical We-Go strategy game combining an RTS with turns. While playing, the events on the battlefield take place in real time but orders can only be issued in the active pause mode. All the players can do later is to observe the results of their decisions.
Realism is an essential element of the Combat Mission series and nothing has changed in this aspect. In Final Blitzkrieg, we will find faithfully recreated battlefields as well as a number of actual military formations such as the US Army or Wehrmacht, Waffen SS, or Fallschirmjäger. Moreover, we have an entire arsenal of their characteristic tactics at our disposal, all of which can be applied at a unit or the whole battalion level. Traditionally, there is no shortage of carefully modeled hardware that consists of over a hundred vehicles and tens of light and heavy weapons.
Apart from the aforementioned story campaigns that span the Siege of Bastogne, the Battle of Aachen, and the key moments of German offensive in the Ardennes, among others, Combat Mission: Final Blitzkrieg also offers 25 individual scenarios in which we fight historical battles on the turn of years 1944 and 1945 such as the Battles for Chaumont, Herrlisheim, Singling, Grosshau, Cheneux, Meijel, and other places. These missions can also be played in the multiplayer mode over the Internet.
Visually, Combat Mission: Final Blitzkrieg for PC stands out from among the majority of equally extensive strategy game by offering fully three-dimensional graphics that can be viewed at any angle and freely zoomed in or out. However, the graphics quality does not significantly deviate from the last few installments of the Combat Missions series and presents below contemporary standards. On the other hand, it makes the game run smoothly even on slower machines.
