How to brew the Mandrake Decoction in the Root of Evil quest from the Brushes with Death DLC? Our walkthrough describes all the necessary steps, thanks to which you will create a mandrake potion for Painter Voyta. Additionally, we described where to look for the required alchemical ingredients - these are: river pearl, mandrake root, and sage.

How to start the quest?

1. The described quest is the second to last quest in the Brushes with Death DLC. You need to complete the Stained Honour quest and talk to Voyta again in his workshop in Kuttenberg.
2. The painter will ask you to brew a potion of mandrake root. First, you will have to obtain all the required ingredients. You can additionally ask Voyta about the locations where you can look for these unique ingredients.

How to get mandrake root?

1. This is one of the unique ingredients of the potion, so don't look for it in among the traders. Instead, visit the gravedigger Frantishek in Kuttenberg. Depending on the time of day, he will be either at the cemetery or in his cottage.
2. Frantishek agrees to give you a mandrake root if you help him get rid of the gang of thieves from the cemetery. Wait with the gravedigger until the nighttime hours and attack the bandits. You can fight them in any way, including with melee weapons (even though they'll go for a fist fight).

1. After winning the fight, you will receive a key to the chest in Frantishek's hut. Go there and take the mandrake root out of the chest.

How to get a river pearl?

1. This is a unique alchemical ingredient. You have to head south from Kuttenberg and keep going along the stream. Ultimately, this will lead you near the bandit camp marked on the attached screenshot.

1. Be careful because bandits attack without warning. It's best to sneak into the camp at night (don't forget to change your clothes to make detection more difficult). You can then stun or kill the bandits. Start with the enemies with torches, who are not sleeping.
2. Check the body of the leader Vladimir. He has one freshwater pearl on him, as well as a key to the chest. You will find 3 other pearls in it (only one is needed for this quest).

How to get sage?

1. This is the only common alchemical ingredient on this list. You can find sage, fpr example, in pastures and on hillsides.
2. You can also visit a herbalist in Kuttenberg - the stall can be found in the eastern part of the market. Collect or purchase 2 herbs to fulfill this mission objective.

How to brew a mandrake potion (Mandrake Decoction)?

1. You're about to face the most important and most difficult part of this quest. You have to independently brew the potion based on the ingredients obtained and the recipe received from the painter.
2. If you want to complete this quest with the best result and unlock the hidden achievement, first unlock the Secret of Secrets skill from the Alchemy tree. It will allow you to brew exceptional quality potions, but only if you perfectly follow the recipe.

1. Visit any alchemy bench (the discovered ones are marked with icons on the map), for example, at one of the apothecaries in the city. Be sure to save the game because it's easy to mess this up and you might waste the collected ingredients.
2. After interacting with the alchemy bench, start by finding the Mandrake Decoction in the recipe book. It should be on the last page. All the required actions are listed there.

1. Hold down the ingredient preparation key (E on the keyboard) for the selected recipe. Turn towards the alchemy bench and confirm selecting them from the list (see the screenshot above).

1. Start by choosing a wine from the left shelf. Henry will automatically pour it into the cauldron and only then will you start adding the main ingredients.

1. Choose the mandrake root (one of the ingredients on the right side) and throw it into the cauldron with wine.
2. Choose the option to lower the cauldron so it is above the fire. As soon as bubbles appear, indicating that the mixture is starting to boil, turn the hourglass to count down 1 round. After the required amount of time has ed, lift the cauldron back up to finish this part of brewing.

1. In the next step, you need to grind the pearl by hand. Choose it from the prepared ingredients. Place the pearl in the mortar and choose the pestle, and Henry will grind it correctly. It will be added to the cauldron.
2. Now repeat the procedure: lower the cauldron and start counting (1 round) using the hourglass as soon as the bubbles appear. After the required amount of time has ed, lift the cauldron.

1. You now have to choose sage twice. Each time, place it in the mortar and use the pestle at the end. After the sage is grinded, it will be added to the cauldron.

1. This time you have to use bellows, so use the handle left of the cauldron (Q key on the keyboard). You need to cook the whole thing for 1 round and in this case, an hourglass is not needed. Pull the handle a total of 3 times (without any breaks between pulls) and wait until the bubbles disappear.

1. As the final step, you need to distill the potion. Start by taking the phial from the left shelf. Use the phial on the adjacent still.

1. Depending on how you've performed, you can brew the correct potion (of varying quality) or fail the process. In the latter case, load the previous save so as not to waste unique alchemical ingredients.

Delivering the potion to Voyta

1. Return with the mandrake potion to Voyta. The artist can evaluate your efforts depending on the quality of the final mixture. Fortunately, you will advance further even if you bring a Mandrake Decoction of a rather poor quality.
2. Once you complete the quest, you will unlock a new symbol for the shield and the final DLC quest, Unveiling, will become available.
