WD_BLACK SN850 is the Second SSD Compatible With PS5
Western Digital has confirmed that its WD_BLACK SN850 SSD with heatsink is fully compatible with the PS5 after the recent console firmware update.

- Western Digital is the second company to officially confirm compatibility of its NVMe SSD with the PS5;
- We are talking about the WD_BLACK SN850 model with heatsink.
The WD_BLACK SN850 with heatsink is the second SSD model to be confirmed as fully compatible with the PlayStation 5. The console's new test system software update enables s to add their own NVMe drives as long as they meet the minimum requirements.
Western Digital confirmed for VGC that the WD_BLACK SN850 (500GB to 2TB, heatsink version) is fully ed by PS5. It should be noted that the announcement was made after reviewing the specs provided by Sony, and not after extensive testing. The first drive whose compatibility has been confirmed is the Seagate FireCuda 530.
The Japanese corporation released a list of requirements that must be met by the drive to work seamlessly with the PS5:
- PCIe Gen4 x4 interface;
- Capacity: 250 GB to 4 TB;
- Sequential read: 5,500 MB/s;
- Maximum device dimensions with heatsink: 110 x 25 x 11.25 mm.
If you try to insert a drive with a PCIe Gen3 interface, you will be greeted with a message about lack of and a request to remove the incompatible hardware. We don't yet know how the PS5 will behave when slower media is installed.
