One of the side tasks in AC Shadows is The Tournament, which you can start at your hideout in the Izumi Settsu region. It will take you to the Yamato region, where you will participate in a tournament consisting of five duels. On this guide page, we described how to win the tournament.

Starting the task

The side mission will appear right next to your hideout in the Izumi Settsu region. It appears automatically when you eliminate seven of Shinbakufu in the main story. Talk to Gyoji by the lake next to the hideout - he will ask you to participate in a tournament. The tournament takes place in the southeastern corner of the Yamato region, in the Ominesanji temple.

You should participate in the tournament as Yasuke - he performs much better in this type of challenges. You will have to fight five duels - when you are ready, strike the temple bell. Your supplies are automatically replenished before each fight - in every confrontation you will have five rations at your disposal, even if you normally have more. You don't have to fight five times in a row - you can leave and do something else between fights.

How to win the tournament?

  1. Lady Masago - your first opponent is Masago, who wields a naginata. She performs very long combinations. The best strategy will turn out to be blocking them instead of parrying. Masago often ends her blue combinations with a red, unblockable attack - usually, parrying her series will not reward you with making her vulnerable to damage. Hold the block button, and when the opponent finishes the combo with a red attack, dodge and counterattack. You can also keep a slight distance from her to provoke her into making a single thrust, which can be easily parried.
  1. Lord Suguru - the second opponent is Suguru, equipped with a sword and a bow. Suguru only performs unblockable combinations, so be ready to dodge, but always stay close to him. If he moves away, he will throw a grenade at the ground and start shooting at you with the bow. The grenade is tiny and easy to miss, but it will knock you down if you're too close, giving Suguru enough time to shoot you. Suguru's sword attacks move him a significant distance, so dodge backwards or keep up with him if he moves too far.
  1. Lord Hokuto - the third enemy, Hokuto, wields a kanabo. He fights identically to heavily armed opponents, performing a series of two or three unblockable attacks. However, beware of his grab - when both his hands glow red, Hokuto will grab you and inflict massive damage. You have barely a fraction of a second to react, so always be ready to dodge and don't use attacks with long animations - focus on light, quick strikes.
  1. Lady O-sen - the fourth opponent, Lady O-Sen, wields two poisoned swords. All her combinations are very short, consisting of a maximum of two attacks - more usually red and unblockable, rarely blue. If you move too far away, she will throw three knives at you in a row. Well-timed dodges should allow you to quickly deal with her - be ready to dodge as soon as she approaches.
  1. Lord Unkai - your last enemy, Lord Unkai, can prove to be very annoying. He uses a naginata and long combinations of strikes, both red and blue. He is very agile and jumps around the arena, making him hard to hit, but during his combos he focuses on attacking in one direction. If you get behind his back, you can easily attack him. Always stay close to the enemy - Unkai will occasionally drink from a bottle, restoring a lot of health. The animation lasts only a fraction of a second, so be ready to interrupt it - a special attack with a very fast animation, like a kick, would be best suited here.

After defeating Lord Unkai, talk to Gyoji at the top of the hill in the temple grounds to complete the mission.
