Expedition 33: How to beat the Chromatic Hexga boss?

Where is Chromatic Hexga?

Chromatic Hexga is located in the Stone Wave Cliffs Cave. Contrary to area's name, it is not located on the Stone Wave Cliffs, but far to the east of the Stone Wave Cliffs, on a small beach, which you have to reach with Esquie's help. This means that you can only get there in the second act. The boss is optional and defeating him is not required to make progress.

Chromatic Hexga's attacks

1. Combo strengthened by shield - Hexga runs up to you and deals three blows. The first is a diagonal jump attack followed by two pirouettes. The more charged the boss's crystal is, the more times he repeats this combo.
2. Area attack - Hexga jumps up, performs a pirouette and deals a single attack to the entire party. Just before the attack, his movements suddenly speed up.

How to defeat Chromatic Hexga?

Hexga is susceptible to ice and resistant to fire. The fight with the boss revolves entirely around charging and discharging a huge crystal on his back. At the end of each turn, the crystal gathers power and changes color from white to yellow, orange, and red. The more power accumulates in the crystal, the more powerful Hexga's combo becomes and the less damage it receives - until it eventually becomes completely untouchable. So you have to discharge the crystal before each enemy turn, shooting at it until it turns white.

At the end of each round, the boss covers himself with shields. You need a way to destroy them - the crystal is resistant to damage when the boss is exposed. You can shoot at the boss to destroy the shields, use skills that hit multiple times, or use Maelle's Breaking Rules, which immediately gets rid of all shields. If you shoot enough times at a completely discharged white crystal, you will destroy it, depriving the enemy of the ability to recharge. Parrying the boss's attacks doesn't give a lot of action points, so try to save them and use items that restore them - you always want to have at least one hero who will be able to discharge the crystal.

Rewards for defeating Chromatic Hexga

For defeating Chromatic Hexga you will receive:

1. 19,410 XP;
2. 2,813 Chroma;
3. Picto - Energising Revive - reviving a character gives the entire party 3 AP.
4. Picto - Confident - the character receives 50% less damage, but cannot be healed.
5. Picto - Exhausting Power - the character deals 50% more damage when inflicted with the Exhaust status.
