Oblivion Remastered: How to use fast travel and is it free?
How to use fast travel in Oblivion Remastered? Our guide explains how to unlock fast travel, where to move fast travel, whether it is free, and how teleports and portals from the game world function.
Last update:
The open world of TES IV Oblivion Remastered is pretty vast; fast travel can help you cover these long distances. On this page of the guide we have explained how fast travel works - you will find out whether you have to pay for fast travel, how to unlock new destinations on the world map and why fast travel may be blocked. Additionally, we discussed how portals and teleports work.
All information below also applies to the original Oblivion. The remaster did not introduce any changes to the fast travel mechanics.
How to unlock fast travel?
Fast travel will be unlocked automatically after you complete the prologue, i.e. after you exit the sewers into the main world map for the first time.
You do not need to reach signposts or other special locations in order to fast travel. You can simply pull up the world map and click on the icon of the location you want to go to. The final step is to confirm the travel. It is completely free and does not consume any resources.
In exceptional circumstances, fast travel may be temporarily unavailable. The most common reasons are:
- You're in combat or pursuit, i.e. you are fighting an enemy or they are actively hunting you. You have to defeat the enemies, escape them (this can be difficult - they will keep chasing you) or get away from them to a safe distance.
- You're in the middle of a quest that cannot be interrupted. This applies primarily to story missions, which may take place, for example, in unique quest locations. You must make enough progress in the quest or complete it in order to regain the possibility to fast travel.
- The hero is inside a building or dungeon. This refers to all locations that are entered by activating a loading screen. You must get back to the surface first.
- The hero is overloaded. The solution to this problem is very simple - you can get on a horse to make fast travel available. You do not need to empty your inventory to be able to use it.
Where can you go using fast travel?
- The most important locations are marked on the map right from the start. These are primarily the largest villages and main towns as well as their districts. Additionally, selected important quest locations may be visible on the map, e.g. Weynon Priory.
- All other locations must first be found through exploration. Keep an eye on the com, which displays the names and icons of locations in your immediate vicinity. Once you get close enough to a location, you will receive a message informing you that it has been discovered (example in the screenshot). From this point on, it can be used as a fast travel destination.
We do not recommend relying on fast travel all the time. You should also explore the game world on your own, which will allow you to discover a lot of new locations. These may be various dungeons and ruins, or smaller villages. That's where you can find loot, traders, and quest givers.
How do teleports work?
- In selected locations in the game, you can also find teleports and portals (the attached screenshot shows a portal from the Mages Guild headquarters). Each teleport/portal can transport your character to a specific location and the destination selection window will not appear. You must approach the mechanism to read the predicted target.
Pay attention to the color of the message. The red color (as in our example) may be a warning that you are teleporting to a forbidden location. This means that you might be entering a restricted area, which will be treated as a criminal offence.
